Come Prepared

What to Bring to Practice

Arriving prepared helps athletes get the most out of every workout. Bring the equipment and essentials needed to train safely, stay hydrated, and complete the session successfully.

Water

Bring plenty of water, especially during warmer weather. Athletes should arrive hydrated rather than waiting until practice begins to start drinking fluids.

Running Shoes

Bring comfortable training shoes appropriate for running and track workouts.

Track Spikes

If you use spikes, bring them with you. Coach Ken will determine when and whether they should be used during the session.

Extra Clothing

Bring an extra shirt, light jacket, or warm-up layer depending on the weather and time of year.

Towel

A small towel can be useful during hot or high-intensity training sessions.

Watch

Athletes who use a GPS or running watch are encouraged to bring it, though one is not required.

Recovery Snack

For longer or more demanding sessions, athletes may want to bring a light post-workout snack or recovery drink.

Dress For The Workout

What to Wear

Athletes should wear comfortable running clothes that allow for unrestricted movement and are appropriate for the weather.

Recommended Attire

  • Running shorts or athletic tights
  • Lightweight athletic shirt or singlet
  • Proper running shoes
  • Running socks
  • Hat or sunglasses when appropriate
  • Light jacket or warm-up gear during cooler weather

Avoid

Heavy clothing, casual sneakers, or anything that may restrict movement during training.

Athletes should dress for the workout and weather rather than simply for the temperature when leaving home.

Arrive Early

Arrive Ready to Train

Athletes should plan to arrive approximately 10 to 15 minutes before practice whenever possible. Arriving early provides time to:

Use the restroom
Change shoes
Organize equipment
Hydrate
Check in with Coach Ken
Prepare mentally for the workout
Begin warm-up activities on time

Athletes should avoid arriving immediately before the workout begins whenever possible.

Safety First

Tell Coach Ken Before You Train

Athletes and parents should always inform Coach Ken about any injury, pain, soreness, illness, physical limitation, or other concern that could affect the athlete's workout. Even minor discomfort should be communicated before training begins.

Do not assume an athlete needs to “push through” pain in order to complete a workout. Training may be adjusted, reduced, or modified when necessary to protect the athlete and support long-term development.

When in doubt, communicate it before the workout starts.

Parents should also notify Coach Ken of any recent medical restrictions, return-to-sport recommendations, or other information that may affect training.

Fuel Up

Fuel Before You Arrive

Athletes should avoid arriving at practice dehydrated or without having eaten for an extended period of time. Whenever possible:

Eat a balanced meal several hours before training
Have a light snack before practice if needed
Drink water throughout the day
Bring additional fluids during hot weather
Avoid experimenting with unfamiliar foods immediately before workouts

Good training begins before athletes step onto the track.

San Diego Climate

Be Prepared for San Diego Weather

San Diego provides excellent year-round training conditions, but temperatures can still vary significantly depending on location and time of day. Athletes should prepare for:

Warm afternoon temperatures
Direct sun
Cooler evenings
Wind
Occasional rain
Coastal vs. inland temperature changes

Encourage athletes to bring appropriate layers and additional hydration when needed.

Standards

Practice Expectations

Be On Time

Arrive prepared and ready to begin.

Be Coachable

Listen, ask questions, and be willing to learn.

Support Your Teammates

Train competitively while encouraging the athletes around you.

Respect the Facility

Follow all track rules and respect other teams, coaches, athletes, and facility staff.

Give Your Best Effort

Not every day requires a personal record, but every day should include focus, effort, and purpose.

Communicate

Let Coach Ken know how you feel and speak up when something does not feel right.

For Parents

Information for Parents

Parents are encouraged to help younger athletes arrive prepared, hydrated, and on time. Please communicate any important information regarding injuries, soreness, medical restrictions, scheduling concerns, or other circumstances that could affect your athlete's training.

Parents should also make sure athletes understand their pickup arrangements before practice begins.

If a parent has questions about training, progress, or upcoming competition, contact Coach Ken directly rather than interrupting an active workout whenever possible.
